IPBES (The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) is a group that works on solutions how to protect the biodiversity in this world. Their job for the past 3 years was to review over 10 000 studies from more than 100 countries all over the world in order to complete the scientific valuations on biodiversity for the entire planet (except the poles and the open oceans).
What they reported was presented at a plenary meeting last month and approved by all 129 countries members of IPBES.
They say that the loss of biodiversity is mainly because of the greedy and unsustainable consumption of resources, the deforestation and the enormous expansion of agriculture. They say that pollution plays a major role, and also the inevitable climate change.
In one of the studies submitted for assessment, the findings say that 58% of the surface of the Earth, where the majority of the human population lives has already lost more than enough biodiversity, and now they question the ability of these ecosystems to support the basic needs in the human societies.
