A newly developed drug specific for felines has recently received an approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (the FDA). The new drug is called “Mirataz” and is developed by the scientists at Kindred Biosciences Inc.
Mirataz is a treatment drug for felines that need weight loss management. It acts by blocking specific histamine and serotonin receptors and in that way controls the appetite and nausea. Their research showed that in 14 days cats increased their body weight by 3.9%.
This new drug will be available to pet owners in the form of a topical solution that is easily applied in the inner pinna of the cat’s ear. This form of application is shown to be the easiest way for pet owners to give medication to their cats. This will allow easy approach without the difficulty of giving the medicine orally, which is not the cat’s favorite way.
The Miratz will be commercially available in the United States this Summer.
