The History of National Dog Day
National Dog Day is a holiday that was founded in 2004 with the pure goal of celebrating all dogs on Earth, of every breed, every mix, every color, and every size. Read more about this holiday on its official web page National Dog Day.
This holiday, National Dog Day, was founded by Colleen Paige, a Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate. Colleen Paige is also the founder of some other holidays you might have heard, like National Puppy Day, National Cat Day, and National Mutt Day.
The idea of creating National Dog Day began in 1999 when Colleen’s dog, Izzy, was diagnosed with bone cancer. When she searched for a day to celebrate dogs, she found there was none – so she decided to create one. She wanted to find an appropriate date to launch National Dog Day – a day with special significance for dogs or for people who love them. It would also have to be a date which could be remembered.
Colleen thought about June 17, 2004, the birthday of her dog Izzy, but decided that it was too close to the summer solstice, which is believed by some historians to be one of the oldest traditions on earth. She decided on June 17 because she wanted a day that dogs loved and would remember and August 15 (International Human Rights Day) was too long off for a busy family with pets. Read about National Puppy Day, founded also by Colleen Paige.
The Idea of National Dog Day
This holiday is celebrated to educate the public of the pureness of dogs, of all the benefits there are of having a dog, how can dogs make your life better, and, of course, the people working tirelessly to help all dogs in need, like rescuers, foster families and of course veterinary professionals.
The founder of this holiday wants to send a clear message that the holiday is against breed banning. She strongly feels that no dog has to suffer for the greed of man and strongly advises against buying dogs from pet stores and puppy mills.
How to Celebrate National Dog Day
National Dog Day is here, and with it comes a whole host of opportunities for you to celebrate your four-legged friend. I’ve put together a short list of great ideas for celebrating National Dog Day, but feel free to be creative and come up with your own special ways to spend today!
All you have to do is give your pup a big hug for all the unconditional love they show you every day or spend your day playing fetch with them in the backyard. Or better yet, set up a dog park in your backyard and invite all of your neighbor’s dogs to come over for some fun. That will be a great way to spend the day with your dog and keep them active! The best thing about National Dog Day is that it’s not just one day, but every day you have with your dog!
There are many ways to celebrate National Dog Day by giving your dog gifts and treats. Here are a few ideas you can use to make this day extra special for your dog! You can either pick out a present for your dog, or you can give them the gift of taking them for a walk while they sit in your front yard sniffing all the tasty smells.
Take your dog to the groomer on National Dog Day so they can get cleaned up and look extra beautiful or handsome! That will be the perfect gift to give them. If they’re clean, they’ll smell nice too. So you’ll have a more enjoyable time with them.
HAPPY NATIONAL DOG DAY!
