Electric shock collars are collars worn around the neck of a dog which delivers electric shock via a remote control or via an automatic trigger (ex. barking). These collars are used to train dogs with behavioral problems by using fear of further punishment. The electric shock is received when the dog is doing something that is undesirable and then the dog is supposed to avoid bad behavior or it will be zapped.

Many studies have been done whether these collars have a positive effect on dogs and what is the psychological after-effect. A research done by DEFRA showed that there are long-term negative welfare consequences even when the collars were used by professionals.

The Scottish Government confirmed that the country will BAN the use of these electric shock dog collars! This move follows a campaign by MSPs and the Scottish Conservative Maurice Golden, as well as many animal charities including the Dog Trust, the Scottish SPCA, and the Kennel Club.
