A recent research, conducted at the Oregon State University, discovered that more than 60% of veterinarians and other veterinary professionals do not discuss with their clients the proper ways of disposing of medical waste such as expired medicine, pet personal care products etc.
This new research study concentrates on the fact that people need more information and education on the subject how to reduce watershed contaminants in order to protect the environment.
One of the authors of the study, Jennifer Lam, worked on the research while she was still a graduate student at the Oregon State University, in the department of marine resource management. She states that she and her team surveyed around 190 pet owners and discovered that nearly half of them discovered their unused pet medicine via the old-fashioned way – the garbage. They also discovered that nearly 61% of the veterinarians did not give any or enough information about proper and safe medicine disposal.
