Animal Health Trust (AHT), an independent charity from the United Kingdom, took the challenge to develop a brand-new vaccine to protect the equine population against EHV (equine herpesvirus).
In Animal Health Trust there more than 250 scientists, veterinarians and other staff.
Equine herpesvirus is a viral infection that can affect any horse at any time and can manifest itself as respiratory disease, can cause abortion, or can be fatal for newborn foals. In addition, in adult horses can cause neurological symptoms that can range between being slightly wobbly to a complete paralysis.
The virus can be dormant until the infected horse gets stressed, either with another disease or by travel/selling.
There is another vaccine available on the market, but according to the Animal Health Trust, that vaccine does not protect against the neurological symptoms, and abortions can still occur in vaccinated populations.
