The feline welfare charity organization “Cats Protection” started a pawsome campaign calles “Kids and Kitties” to educate and encourage parents-to-be not to give up on their feline family members when expecting a child.

The campaign was inspired by the devastating numbers that showed that more than half cat owners that were expecting a child have serious concerns about their cat and the pregnancy. Around 80% of the women were concerned about cleaning the litter box, and more than 66% of the new parents had concerns over toxoplasmosis.

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection caused by Toxoplasma Gondii. This parasite lives in the soil and in raw meat. The cats get the infection by hunting and killing infected prey. The parasite is transmitted through the feces and can easily be transferred to humans. Especially vulnerable to this infection are young children, older people with a weakened immune system, and pregnant women. In pregnant women, the parasite may cause complications and abortion. It is advised that pregnant women should not clean the litter box of their cats.

The new campaign aims to stop the fear and to educate the public how to protect their cats and themselves. They say that with very few precautions and considerations, cat and children can live happy and harmonious life together. And we all know the benefits of children growing up with pets.
